our whimsical woodland Christmas decor

As I've previously mentioned, our Christmas decor gets changed up every year. I simply cannot bring myself to commit to using the same ornaments, color scheme, etc. year after year.

This year, I went with a whimsical woodland theme. It was inspired by an adorable, fun line of gift bags & wrapping paper I discovered at Target last Christmas -- but after I'd already decorated for that season...... so I stocked up a year ahead. The gift wrap served as inspiration for the tree and mantle decorations.

For the tree, I pulled out all the animal ornaments we had (birds, reindeer, fox, raccoon, etc.), and our red, green, blue, purple, and gold ornaments as well. I was really glad that several of the vintage ornaments I "inherited" from my Nana were in the right color scheme too. I love when I'm able to incorporate them into our Christmas decor. I opted to use two different garlands -- a cranberry red bead garland as another woodland-style element, along with a sparkly white tinsel garland for a touch of whimsy.

Please take note that Evan helped decorate the tree & he was so proud of himself that I didn't have the heart to rearrange his ornaments after the fact. Therefore, we have a clustered, bottom-heavy look this year! :)

I decided to keep the mantle more on the neutral side. My mom gave me a some tree cuttings she had used for her Thanksgiving tablescape. These were topped off with oatmeal cookie-scented tealights my mother-in-law made. (Yum!) Incorporated with the mini stumps are a few wooden mushrooms left over from Evan's 3rd birthday party. I added a retro gold glitter reindeer figure, and - strung throughout these items - is a gray and white felt ball garland. I left in place our monogram stand (which always graces the mantle).

I love watching this space fill with Christmas cards throughout the month of December, including the notes and cards Karl receives from his students before Christmas break.

It seems nearly every store has marked down their Christmas decor already -- or it certainly will be by this weekend. Now is the perfect time to scoop up some new items for next year. Below I'm sharing some items that would be perfect to help recreate this theme (or incorporate into your existing decor).
